Ngong Ping Village is a popular destination on Lantau Island offering a mix of cultural experiences, exciting attractions, and beautiful scenery. There are a lot of family-friendly activities at the village, but if you’re not a family traveler, you can also relax or shop at the various shops there.

What to Do in Ngong Ping Village

If you’re going to see the Big Buddha by riding the cable car, you’ll arrive at Ngong Ping Village first. There are many shops and restaurants there, but the village also has several fun and family-friendly activities that is worth trying if you have spare time in Ngong Ping area.

Motion 360

Motion 360 is a 4D experience that shows “Discover Lantau” short movie for around 10 minutes. There’s an entrance free of 40 HKD for adult and 20 HKD for children ages 3-11.

Cable Car Discovery Center

In the discovery center, you can learn more about Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car system by putting VR headsets to learn access the engineering zone that is only accessible to the engineers there. This could be a fun learning experience and a great way to spend quality time if you’re travelling with children.

The Art of Chocolate Hong Kong

The Art of Chocolate Hong Kong is an interactive chocolate museum. There are 388 exhibits made out of 2,800 kgs of chocolate that includes wet market, mahjong game, and more. You can also sample 10 “Angel Chocolates” made by a Switzerland manufacturer. The admission tickets for adults start from HKD 88.

Walking with Buddha (Temporarily Closed)

Walking with Buddha was an interactive exhibit located at Ngong Ping Village that allowed visitors to learn more about Buddhism through interactive displays and videos. Unfortunately, this exhibit has been temporarily closed due to COVID-19 restrictions but will hopefully reopen soon!

Take Pictures at Photogenic Spot

Just outside the cable car terminal, you can see a small open area called Stupa Square, where you can take pictures with the Big Buddha sitting atop the mountain as your photo background! There’s also a set of eight traditional Chinese blessing drums that you can take photos with. Another spot is the Bodhi Tree that is just beside the Walking with Buddha. You can also find murals and mosaic wall arts across the village.

Climb 268 Stairs to Big Buddha

The iconic Big Buddha statue is one of the most popular attractions in Hong Kong. To reach it, head to Ngong Ping Piazza and climb up 268 steps to reach the base statue.

Visit Po Lin Monastery

Po Lin Monastery is ac active Buddhist monastery founded in 1906 that features traditional Chinese architecture as well as beautiful gardens. You can eat at the vegetarian restaurant or take part in guided tours around the monastery grounds!

Shop for Souvenirs

No trip to Ngong Ping would be complete without picking up some local souvenirs. There are plenty of stores selling shirts, postcards, and much more.
